Biographical History

Edwin Warren was born in Quincy, California, on June 20, 1881. He died in Oakland, California, in January of 1974. He was raised in Pacific Grove and attended Stanford University in the years of 1904-1908. He studied ornithology, zoology, and English literature. Very religious, he came from a Methodist family that was among the founders of Pacific Grove. He loved nature and bird watching in particular, and his journals reflect the many species of birds he encountered and the scenery he saw. Edwin made two trips to Alaska, in 1903 and 1904, pursuing his interest in ornithology and earning money for his tuition at Stanford. His first trip included a bicycle ride from Pacific Grove to Sacramento, continuing by train and ship to Juneau. He worked at the gold mine in Treadwell and relates the details of mining life. He first worked underground in the shaft, later in the three hundred stamp mill, and was also a cage tender and a powder man.

From the description of Diaries of two trips to Alaska from Pacific Grove, California, 1903 and 1904. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 754864379
