Biographical History
American poet.
Robert Bly (born December 23, 1926) is an American poet, author, activist and leader of the Mythopoetic Men's Movement. John Gill published a small literary journal in the 1960s entitled New American and Canadian Poetry. He also authored books of poetry, as well as published books of poetry of others under the name of New Books beginning in 1966.
Robert Bly is an author and public figure, known chiefly for his award-winning poetry and his contribution to reviving contemporary interest in poetry. Born in Madison, Minnesota, and raised on the nearby family farm, he served in the United States Navy and afterward attended St. Olaf College and Harvard University, ultimately earning a master's degree from the University of Iowa. A Fulbright scholarship enabled him to spend time in Norway, where he was influenced by poets not well known in the United States, and he resolved to translate their work into English, founding the literary magazine The Fifties to publish his translations. As his reputation as a poet grew, he became increasingly active in social issues, and helped lead American Writers Against the Vietnam War. As a poet, editor, translator, and speaker, he has done much to renew interest in poetry. Bly's1990 book Iron John was an international bestseller, and inspired the Mythopoetic Men's Movement in the United States.
Robert Bly, a prominent contemporary American poet, was born in Minnesota and educated at Harvard and the University of Iowa. In 1962, he published his first book of poetry, Silence in snowy fields. Since then he has published more than ten collections of poetry, including Four ramage (1983).
