Biographical History

Helmuth Hörmann, the second child of Rev. Arthur and Maria Hormann, was born 1909. As a child, he came with his parents and older brother, Bernhard, to Honolulu, when Rev. Hormann became pastor of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu in 1916. Helmuth began studies at University of Hawaii in 1925, graduating in 1929. In 1932, he enrolled in the Max Reinhardt School of Theatre in Berlin, but returned to Hawaii when the Nazis came to power in 1933. He re-entered UH, receiving an M.A. in 1935. He also studied two years at Yale School of Drama and completed a Ph. D. at Cornell in 1941. Helmuth had an extensive teaching career. In addition to teaching at Hilo Intermediate, Kalakaua Intermediate, and Kahuku High schools, he taught at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and for seventeen years at Pasadena Playhouse College of Theatre Arts. After the College closed in 1966, he returned to Hawaii, teaching for two years at Chaminade University and six years at Leeward Community College, retiring in 1974. Helmuth passed away in August 2001.

Irmgard Hormann was the youngest of three children of Rev. and Mrs. Hormann, born in 1917. After graduating from Punahou School, she enrolled in the University of Hawaii in 1933 and graduated with her B.A. in 1937. During her student years at UH, Irmgard participated in the Institute of Pacific Relations Youth Conference and the Asilomar Conference. She served on the staff of the Hawaii Quill for three years, including a year as vice president and a year as president which included editing. After graduating from UH, Irmgard attended Columbia University in New York City where she earned a degree in librarianship. After her return to Hawaii, she began a long career at the Hawaii State Library, retiring as the statewide consultant for Young Adult Services in 1973.
