Biographical History
The educational programs of the National Museum of American Art, now directed from the Office of Educational Programs, began in a formal way when George Gallenkamp was appointed Curator of Education, serving 1965-1966. In 1967 Susan C. Sollins joined the staff as Visual Information Specialist. By 1968, as Assistant for Museum Programs, she was responsible for elements of the educational program, becoming Chief of Museum Programs in 1970. In 1970 a Department of Education was formally established, and Darrel Sewell, Associate Curator, replaced Sollins, serving until 1973. Peter Bermingham became Curator of the Department in 1973 and served until 1978. Barbara Shissler Nosanow succeeded Bermingham and served from 1979 to 1982. In 1983 and 1984 Nosanow was Assistant Director, Programs and, in 1985, Assistant Director, Museum Programs. With Nosanow's departure in 1988 Judith O'Sullivan was named Acting Assistant Director, Museum Programs, followed by James W. Volkert, Acting Assistant Director, Museum Programs, 1989. In 1990 the Office of Museum Programs became the Office of Educational Programs, and Nora Panzer was made its Acting Chief, 1990, and Chief, 1994- .
