Biographical History
The Society of Utopian Studies, founded in 1975, is an international, interdisciplinary association devoted to the study of utopias, utopianism, utopian literature, utopian theory, and intentional communities, with a particular emphasis on literary and experimental utopias. It published a newsletter, Utopus Discovered: A Most Informal Newsletter, since 1975. The Society's first academic journal, Alternative Futures, published from 1978-1981 was edited by Merritt Abrash and Alexandra Aldridge. Between 1987 and 1991, the Society for Utopian Studies also published conference papers in a four volume set, also titled Utopian Studies. Lyman Tower Sargent, faculty member at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, founded the journal Utopian Studies in 1988 and served as its editor from issue 1.1 (1990) to 15.1 (2004). Utopian Studies became the Society's academic journal in 1990.
