Biographical History
Charles Copeland was born in 1858 in Thomaston, Me., to George F. Copeland and Mary Monroe Copeland. Orphaned at an early age, his care was undertaken by his aunt, Mary Smith. He moved to Boston, Mass., in 1877 to study art but frequently returned to Thomaston where he met and married Eda O. Mills in 1886. The couple moved to Newton Center, Mass., where they raised three daughters. Copeland remained in Newton Center until his death in 1945. He was a distinguished painter and illustrator and kept an art studio at 110 Tremont St., Boston, Mass. He was once president of the Boston Art Club and other groups and his paintings have been exhibited by the Boston Art Club, the Society of American Artists, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
