Biographical History
Kate Barrett (1935- ) spent several decades as a professor and award-winning leader in the field of physical education. Born in New York City, Barrett secured her bachelor's degree in physical education from the the Boston-Bouve College of Tufts University in 1957. She continued her studies in educational gymnastics/dance from 1960 to 1961 at the Chelsea College of Physical Education in Sussex, England, received her master's degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1964, and was granted a doctorate in Physical Education (with a minor in Curriculum/Instruction) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1969. That same year, Barrett completed post-doctoral study with a concentration in Educational Dance at the Worcester College of Education in England. Barrett began her association with UNCG in 1970 when she was appointed a professor in the Department of Physical Education. For the spring term of 1977-1978, she was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Physical Education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Barrett was the recipient of an Alumni Teaching Excellence Award at UNCG in 1984, and in 1985, she received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Northeastern University in Boston. Barrett accepted the position of Director of Teacher Education at UNCG in 1989, and continued in that position until her retirement in 1996. Barrett is still active on the UNCG Board of Trustees and was responsible for securing many of the physical education and dance collections in the UNCG archives.
