Biographical History
Charles A. Strong (1862-1940) received the A.B. from the University of Rochester in 1884 and from Harvard in 1885. He spent the year 1886-87 at the University of Berlin studying psychology, philosophy, and physiology. After teaching at Cornell University, Clark University, and the University of Chicago, Strong was appointed lecturer in psychology at Columbia University in 1895, and professor of psychology in 1903. From 1906 until his death, Strong resided in Fiesole, Italy, where he pursued his theories of materialism, notably the relationship between mind and body. Hisfriendships with George Santayana and William James shaped his understanding of the nature and scope of human perception. In 1889, he married.
Bessie Rockefeller, the eldest child of John D. Rockefeller, Senior. They had one child, Margaret Strong de Cuevas.
