Biographical History

George Foster Emmons, naval officer, commissioned Commodore in 1868, was then assigned to the Hydrographic Office in Washington and commandant of the Philadelphia Navy Yard. He retired in 1873. His son, George Thornton Emmons, attended the Naval Academy.

George Foster Emmons was born on August 23, 1811, in Clarendon, VT. He entered the Navy in 1828 and was promoted to passed midshipman in 1834. He was a member of the U.S. Exploring Expedition from 1838-1841, where he explored the Columbia River are and the San Francisco Bay region. During the Mexican War, he was in USS Ohio off the Mexican and California coasts. He was on active duty during the Civil War, where he participated in the blockade of the Gulf of Mexico and later commanded the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. He commanded the USS Ossipee during 1868. He retired in 1872 with the rank of rear admiral and settled in Princeton, NJ, where he died in 1884.

George Foster Emmons (1811-1884), appointed a midshipman in 1828, served on the frigate Brandywine in the Mediterranean 1830-1833, served on the Peacock in the Wilkes Expedition 1838-1842, joined the ship Boston of the Brazil Squadron, and served on the Ohio as part of the Pacific Squadron. He was commissioned commodore in 1868 and spent the rest of his career on shore at the Hydrographic Office in Washington and as commandant of the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

From letter included with journal and letter: "Lieutenant George Foster Emmons, U.S. Navy, [was] attached to the U.S. Exploring Expedition; who after the wreck of the Sloop-of-war "Peacock" at the mouth of the Columbia River, July 18, 1841, took charge of a party of Scientists of the Expedition, and others, and made his way overland through a comparatively unexplored country to San Francisco Bay, rejoining the squadron."
