Biographical History

The Catholic University of Louvain, created by papal bull in 1425, is the oldest university in the world continuously under Catholic direction. Closed by Napoleon in 1797, it was reopened ca. 1835. Its library was razed during World War I, rebuilt with American financial assistance and again partly destroyed in World War II. In the 1960s linguistic conflict at the university resulted in the French divisions being transferred to a new location while the Flemish divisions remained on the old campus.
