Biographical History

Allan John Mackenzie Campbell was born 17 October 1922 in Dingwall , the former County of Ross and Cromarty in the Highlands of Scotland. His father, William, was an Inspector of Police in the Ross-shire constabulary, Isle of Lewis . Allan came to the University of Glasgow in 1940 to study medicine. In his first year he studied zoology, physics, chemistry, anatomy and botany. In his second year he studied anatomy and physiology. His third year was 1942-1943 , during which time he studied pathology, surgery and materia medica. For his fourth year he studied medicine, midwifery, clinical medicine and public health and jurisprudence. In his final year, 1944-1945 , he studied medicine, surgery and midwifery. He graduated MB ChB in 1945 . He went on to complete an MD from the University of Glasgow and graduated in January 1956 , his thesis title being The vascular complications of Diabetes Mellitus . In the 1970s he became a Member and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians .

Dr Campbell began his career as a House Physician at the Western Infirmary , Glasgow after graduation, and then went on to become a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps . After this he completed post graduate service in the Western Infirmary before moving on to become a Senior Medical Registrar at the Royal Alexandra Infirmary , Paisley as well as being a member of the Scottish Social Experimental Medicine and Medical and Scientific Section of the British Diabetic Association . His final position was as a consultant physician at Coathill Hospital in Coatbridge and Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, Scotland . Whilst at Hairmyres hospital , Dr Allan Campbell was appointed as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer to final year medical students at the hospital. He retired in 1987 when he went on to write an autobiography, as well as research his family history. Dr Campbell passed away in 2011 .
