Sergeĭ Germanovich Pushkarev was born on August 8, 1888 in Kursk Province, Russia. He attended the University of Heidelberg and the University of Leipzig from 1911-1914. Pushkarev served as a volunteer under the Provisional Government of Russia in 1917, and in the White Russian Army from 1919-1920. He held teaching positions in Russia, Czechoslovakia, and the United States, including an assistant professorship in Russian history at Yale University from 1950-1955. Pushkarev also wrote several works on Russian history.
