Joseph Slate was born January 19, 1928, in Hollidays Cove, West Virginia. He became an artist and educator, and an author and illustrator of children's books. He has written for young adults, but is perhaps best know for his Miss Bindergarten series, about a kindergarten teacher whose pupils are all animals.
