Biographical History

Anthony Benezet was a Quaker teacher and abolitionist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born on the 11th of the 4th month 1713, son of French Protestant John Stephen Benezet. In 1736, he married Joyce Marriott of Philadelphia. He’d taught the Friends' School in Germantown, and in the Friends' Public School in Philadelphia. Benezet wrote and circulated a large volume of papers, tracts, and books upon philanthropic subjects, chiefly, however, on slavery, which he strongly opposed. In the last two years of his life, he was employed as a teacher in the school of instruction of the Black people and their offspring. Benezet died May 3, 1784.
