Biographical History

This Whig Party in Cleveland, Ohio, drew its membership from former Federalists, anti-Masons, and national Republicans who opposed the limited government policies of the Democratic Party and President Andrew Jackson. The Whigs favored an activist federal government and broad humanitarian reforms. In Cleveland, Whig members were generally businessmen and those who profited from the Ohio and Erie Canal. Evangelical Protestants were drawn to the Whig Party as well, advocating a platform of temperance, public schools, and prison reform.
