Biographical History
Edward D. Taussig was born in St. Louis, MO in 1847. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1867. He served in a number of ships and at the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, RI. He was with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1898 and went on to command the USS Bennington. He took possession of Wake Island for the U.S., and took charge of Guam. He served in the Philippines in 1899, and in 1900 served in North China during the Boxer Rebellion. In 1906 he was CO of the USS Indiana and then CO of the Norfolk Navy Yard and the Fifth Naval District.
