Biographical History

Philip Bourke Marston (1850-1887) was born in London, England, the son of John Westland Marston (1819-1890), a dramatic poet. When three years old, Philip lost most of his sight and by the end of his life he was totally blind. He published three volumes of poetry and wrote many short stories. The American poet and literary critic, Ellen Louise Chandler Moulton (1835-1908) was a close friend of Marston and she acted as his literary executor. After his death she published several collections of his poems.

From the description of Papers. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 207154636

English poet Philip Marston lived a life beset by personal tragedy, which colored his verse a dark, gloomy gray. Although the tone and themes of his work were consistently sombre, his talent was genuine, and his lyrics were enormously popular throughout his short life.

From the description of Philip Marston letter to E.C. Stedman, ca. 1885. (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). WorldCat record id: 51262846
