Biographical History

Designer Stewart Chaney (1910-1969) was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He studied theatre at Yale University under George Pierce Baker, and painting with Andre L'Hote in Paris.

He considered his sets for Life with father, 1939, The voice of the turtle, 1943, and the 1935 production of Ghosts with Alla Nazimova his finest. In addition to designing both sets and costumes for numerous theatre productions, Chaney also designed for ballet and opera, as well as motion pictures. He died at age 59 at his home in East Hampton (Long Island), N.Y.
