Biographical History

Mr. and Mrs. J. Bruce Bredin sponsored a series of three trips in 1956, 1958, and 1959 to the Caribbean. The primary purpose of the expeditions was to collect specimens for the US National Museum collections. These collecting trips were led by Waldo L. Schmitt, curator of Invertebrate Zoology at the US National Museum. Participants included Fenner A. Chace Jr., J. F. Gates Clarke, Ernest N. May, and Albert C. Smith. The first expedition (March 9 - April 17, 1956) visited islands in the Lesser Antilles between Trinidad and Barbuda, along with Virgin Gorda and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. The second Expedition (March 25 - May 3, 1958) visited US and British Virgin Islands as well as the northernmost Leeward Islands. The third Expedition (April 2 - May 4, 1959) traveled to the islands of Lesser Antilles between Trinidad and Barbuda.
