Biographical History
The Texas Declaration of Independence formally declared the autonomy of the Republic of Texas from Mexico during the Texas Revolution.
A committee, led by George C. Childress (1804-1841) and including James Gaines, Edward Conrad, Collin McKinney, and Bailey Hardeman, drafted the document on March 1, 1836 during the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos. On March 2nd, 54 delegates, each representing one Texas settlement, approved and signed the declaration. Five copies were made of the original document and dispatched to Bexar, Goliad, Nacogdoches, Brazoria, and San Felipe.
