Governor Bob Graham inaugurated his Oral History Program on May 20, 1980 with a dinner at the Governor's Mansion honoring the late State Senator Verle A. Pope of St. Augustine. The purpose of this event and those that would follow in succeeding years was for family, friends, and contemporaries of the honored guest to record the observations on and experiences with that person for preservation in the State Archives. Distinguished guests from Florida politics, business, or academia spoke during the dinners about the honoree, and after the dinner all of the guests recorded their reminiscences at recording stations throughout the Mansion.
