Biographical History

Born in Charleston, S.C., Charles "Pug" Ravenel, acquired his nickname after breaking his nose twice while playing baseball; attended Bishop England High School (Charleston, S.C.) and Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.); graduated from Harvard University in 1961, was named First Marshal (President) of his class; earned his MBA in 1964 from Harvard Business School and worked in New York for a Wall Street investment banking firm.

In 1972 Ravenel returned to Charleston, S.C., where he helped establish firm of Ravenel, Dawson, and Hastie, Inc., an investment banking firm; in 1974, won the Democratic nomination for governor from among 7 candidates; however a lawsuit challenged his residency status; the S.C. Supreme Court ruled that Ravenel did not meet the residency requirement, and the Democratic nomination went to William Jennings Bryan Dorn. The controversy enabled the Republican candidate, James Edwards, to win the election and become the state's first Republican governor since Reconstruction. In following years, Ravenel twice campaigned unsuccessfully for the U.S. Congress.
