Biographical History

Glasgow University Distributist Club was founded in 1929 at the University of Glasgow , Scotland. This political club was affiliated as an autonomous branch of the Scottish Distributist League founded by G K Chesterton (1874-1936) and the Glasgow University Union as 'a balanced middle way between Conservatism and Socialism'. The object of the Club was to uphold distributist principles - 'a wide distribution of property as the basis of social order, justice and stability' - by supporting small businesses, working against all kinds of monopoly and championing individual victims of the oppression of the current system. The Distributist League and Club were non-party and the Club took an active part in Union debates.

Membership of the club was open to all students and former students of the University of Glasgow. Office bearers included an honorary president and no more than 8 honorary vice-presidents, a president, vice-president, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, whip secretary- all of whom were to be male. There was also a publicity convenor and literature secretary. All of these, along with the University's Queen Margaret Union convenor, secretary and whip, constituted the general committee. The executive committee consisted of the president, Queen Margaret convenor and the secretary. It appears that the club folded in the late 1970s.
