O'Meara, Andrew P. (Andrew Pick), 1907-2005

Andrew Pick O'Meara (b. March 23, 1907, West Bend, Wis.-d. Sept. 20, 2005, Arlington, Va.), General in the U.S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1930. Early in his military career he was in the horse artillery, an instructor at the Military Academy, and may have written the first field manual on tank gunnery. During World War II, he was assigned several command positions with the artillery in the European Theater of Operations. During the Korean conflict, he was artillery commander for the 7th Infantry Division and IX Corps. He was based in France as director of military assistant for the U.S. European Command from 1959 to 1961, and in the Panama Canal Zone as commander in chief, U.S. Southern Command from 1961 to 1965. He retired in 1967 after serving two years in Germany as commander in chief, U.S. Army in Europe and NATO's Central Army Group.
