Biographical History
Reverend Gustavus Hines, Methodist missionary, was born in Herkimer County, New York on September 6, 1809. In 1839, Hines was appointed a missionary to Oregon and traveled on the ship Lausanne with his wife, Lydia. Initially, Hines was assigned to assist Jason Lee in exploring the Umpqua Valley for a possible mission site. He spent the remainder of his missionary service, however, at the Willamette Mission. In 1843, Hines was one of the founders of the Provisional Government of Oregon. He returned to the East by ship in 1845-1846. Gustavus Hines died on December 9, 1873.
