Biographical History

Roelof Jacobus Doremus, known as Ralph, was the son of Susanna Jacobus Jones (1767-1840) and Petres Doremus (1773-1846). He established a dry goods and clothe store in Paterson, New Jersey. A few years after the Panic of 1837, he closed his store and focused on his extensive farmlands. Doremus also served in public office as the Town Clerk of Saddle River Township from 1828-1831, and as a Judge of the Court of Appeals in 1837. He was a member and patron of the Second Reformed Church of Paterson. On June 1, 1825, he married Catharine Van Houten (1806-1874), and with her had twin sons, Henry and Francis.
