Biographical History

Hollis Watkins was born in Lincoln County near Summit, Mississippi, in 1941, the twelfth child of sharecroppers. Mr. Watkins was jailed for participating in the Woolsworth's lunch counter sit-in in McComb and a walk-out at the McComb high school. He also worked with Vernon Dahmer for voter registration and later started the Holmes County Project. He was president of Southern Echo at the time of the interview.
