Biographical History

Russell Freedman was born October 11, 1929, in San Francisco, CA. He is the author of more than forty nonfiction books for children, and he has been honored with many major awards. When he received the Newbery Medal for Lincoln: A Photobiography, he became the first nonfiction author in thrity-two years to win that award. Only a handful of nonfiction writers has been awarded the medal since it was first presented in 1922. In 1998 he was awarded the prestigious Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for the entire body of his work. Freedman has written on subjects such as famous teenagers, animal behavior, and American presidents. His books are noted for their understandable and entertaining presentation of often-complex information. Biographical Source: Something About the Author, Volume 123, p. 37-43
