Biographical History

Bailey (1884-1967) was educated at Harvard University (A.B. 1907; A.M. 1909) and, as a botanist, was associated with Harvard for most of his career -- first at the Bussey Institution and later at the Arnold Arboretum and the Gray Herbarium. During World War I he headed the wood section of the Bureau of Aircraft Production. Bailey also authored the controversial "Bailey Plan" (1945) which recommended the unification of botanical activities at Harvard.

From the description of Papers of Irving Widmer Bailey, 1918-1967 (inclusive), 1966-1967 (bulk). (Harvard University). WorldCat record id: 40271870
