Biographical History

Language Research, Incorporated was founded in 1941by Ivor Armstrong Richards, Christine Gibson and others in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was originally called the Orthological Institute, in 1947 renamed English Language Research, Inc. and finally in 1951 became Language Research, Inc. The non-profit corporation worked to develop, publish, and disseminate materials to aid the process of learning of English and other languages. Their work centered around the use of Basic English, an English-based international auxiliary language first developed by Charles Kay Ogden in the 1920s. LRI ceased its operations in 1997.
