Biographical History

Employed in office of architect Josef Hoffmann, Vienna, in 1907; August Perret, Paris, and with Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, Berlin, in 1910. Founder-Director, L'Atelier d'Art Réunis, La Chaux de Fonds, 1909-1914, and Instructor, l'Eplattenier's Nouvelle Section de l'Ecole d'Art, La Chaux de Fonds, 1911-1914; also worked as a painter and lithographer from 1912. In private practice as an architect, Paris, 1917 until his death, 1965.
Le Corbusier, a pseudonym for Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, was one of the 20th century's most important and influential architects. His early work was inspired by nature, but he gradually developed his conception of the house as a machine for living and the International Style. He built diverse structures throughout the world, including the Palace for the League of Nations in Switzerland. His functional, sophisticated designs and use of modern materials were very influential; much of modern architecture is based on interpretations of his theories.
Born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier studied engraving at the School of Applied Arts, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He worked in the offices of Auguste Perret (1908-10) and briefly for Peter Behrens (1910) before establishing an office in Paris. One of the central figures in the evolution of modern architecture, Le Corbusier is remembered for many significant buildings and projects realized throughout Europe, India, Japan and the Americas, as well as for his seminal book Vers une Architecture (1923).
