Biographical History

Bernard Kutner was born in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. He obtained a B.S.S. in social science from the City College of New York in 1944 and an M.A. at the New School for Social Research in 1948. Kutner then earned his Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard in 1951. Kutner had an extensive teaching career, from 1947 until 1972, and taught at several institutions, including Sarah Lawrence College, Brooklyn College, Cornell University, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Kutner served as Dean of Boston University Sargent College of Allied Health Professionals from 1972 until his untimely death in 1975.

Bernard Kutner dedicated his life to the needs of others, especially those of the disabled. He was involved with many organizations, including the New York Advisory Committee for Aging, the Child Welfare League of America, the Gerontological Society, and the New York State Psychological Association. From 1959 to 1961, he served on the Ad Hoc Research Committee for the Association for the Aid of Crippled Children. He also served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Health and Human Behavior for six years and was president of the Division of Social Psychology from 1966 to 1967.
