Biographical History

Courtney Whitney (b. May 20, 1897, Washington, D.C.-d. Mar. 21, 1969), Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, enlisted in the D.C. National Guard and the Signal Corps, aviation section reserve in 1917 and 1918, was commissioned in the aviation section reserve in 1918, and received his law degree in 1923. He served on active duty in the Philippines, resigned in 1927, and practiced law until he returned to active duty in October 1940. He was assigned as assistant chief of the legal division, then assistant air judge advocate at the Army Air Corps headquarters until April 1943. For the remainder of World War II, General Whitney served as Chief of the Philippine Regulatory Section of Allied Intelligence Bureau, chief of civil affairs security with U.S. Army Forces Pacific Ocean Area, and as chief aide and confidant to General Douglas MacArthur. He resigned from the Army in May 1951.
