Biographical History
In 1875 classes in music were included in the first list of classes offered at the University of Washington. By the time Washington became a state in 1889, there were classes in harmony, composition, orchestration, and practical instruction. An orchestra was organized soon after. In 1894 the Department of Music was established, and by 1895 music students were assisting with programs at musical and social affairs and organizations, including the Seattle Ladies Musical Club. The School of Music moved into its new building in the University of Washington Quadrangle in 1950. Deans of the Department of Music include Irving McKay Glen, who served from 1901 to 1915 but continued to play a major role until 1932. Frances Dickey assumed leadership in 1932, and after the department was reorganized in 1935 as the School of Music, he continued to serve as executive officer. Carl Paige Wood succeeded Dickey as director and held that position until his death in 1947. Kathleen Munro was acting director from 1947 to 1949, when Stanley Chapple filled the position. In 1962 Demar Irvine became acting director until William Bergsma took over, serving from 1963 to 1971. John T. Moore was director from 1971 to 1979, and succeeding directors were Paul M. Palombo (1979-1981), Fredric Lieberman (1981-1985), Daniel M. Neuman (1985-1995), and Robin McCabe (1995- ).
