Biographical History

The Chautauqua Circle was an African American women's club established in 1913 in Atlanta, Georgia. Organized by Henrietta (Curtis) Porter, it enabled members of the Atlanta community to advance their education culturally and intellectually. The Circle was inspired by the philosophies of the National Chautauqua Movement, an influential development in popular adult education originating in 1874 in New York State.

From the description of Chautauqua Circle collection, 1913-1970 (bulk 1933-1963). (Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center, Inc.). WorldCat record id: 38477478
