English novelist and dramatist.
English spy fiction and espionage writer noted for his use of narrative and characterization.
Alfred Edward Woodley Mason was born in London, educated at Dulwich College, and graduated from Trinity College, Oxford, in 1888. He spent some time as an actor, and published his first novel in 1895. He wrote some twenty novels, including The Four Feathers, which has been filmed a number of times. He also wrote mysteries featuring the French detective, Hanaud. He served as an intelligence officer in World War I.
