Biographical History

Andersonville Prison, represented in the collection through its hospital records and registers, was located in southwest Georgia and operated for 15 months between 1864 and 1865. The site was used by the Confederate Army as a prisoner-of-war camp for captured Union soldiers. At the time of its closure, almost 13,000 Union soldiers had died at Andersonville. The records were collected by E. P. Hopkins, a captured soldier from Ohio who worked as a steward in the prison hospital.

The 13th Regiment of the New York National Guard, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., was initially organized as the 13th Regiment of the New York State Militia in 1847. During the Civil War, the 13th Regiment served in Annapolis and Baltimore, MD; Suffolk, VA; and Harrisburg, PA at various periods from 1861 to 1863, commanded by Colonels Abel Smith, Robert B. Clark, and John B. Woodward. The Regiment was also in the service of New York State during the New York City draft riots of 1863. The Regiment's headquarters were based at the Brooklyn City Armory, located at Henry and Cranberry Streets. Though the Regiment was disbanded in 1898, a battalion of four companies continued to volunteer their services to the United States, going on to serve as part of the 22nd Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War, and later being designated the 13th Regiment of Heavy Artillery.
