Biographical History

Bucke was a Canadian psychiatrist and psychologist, Walt Whitman's literary executor, and superintendent of the London Ontario Asylum for the Insane. Love was an American and the Director of Physical Training for Women at Indiana State Normal School.

Richard Bucke, physician and author, was born in England and brought to Canada by his parents. He studied medicine at McGill University and also in London and Paris. In 1877, he was appointed superintendent of the Asylum for the Insane at London, Ontario, and he held this position until his death.

Bucke was the author of Man's moral nature (1879), Walt Whitman (1883) and Cosmic consciousness (1901). He was also one of the literary executors of Whitman's estate and edited many of Whitman's works.
