Biographical History

John W. Hevener was a native of Dunmore in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. He was a high school teacher and principal in Ohio, and eventually taught at the college level in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Hevener is best known for the book, Which Side Are You On?: Harlan County, Kentucky Coal Miners, 1931-1939. Before his death he had done extensive research and preliminary writing directed toward a book-length treatment of the history of the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company in Widen, (Clay County) West Virginia. Other research focused on the social and cultural impact of Appalachian migrants on Akron, Ohio.
