Bradd, James H.

James H. Bradd was a United States (U.S.) Civil War soldier. He was a private in the 13th Iowa Infantry Regiment.

James Bradd enlisted in New York at the age of 16 when the Civil War broke out against the wishes of his father who removed him from the Army and returned him to school. James then went to Mount Vernon, Iowa where his uncles lived in order to enlist with them. In September of 1862 Bradd enlisted as a private in the 13th Iowa Infantry. In March 1864 he was granted a veterans furlough which he used to visit family in New York. He returned to his regiment on April 18, 1864 and served until he was captured at the Battle of Atlanta and imprisoned in Andersonville, Ga. (July 29-Sept. 12) and Florence, S.C. (Sept. 14-Dec. 8). On December 11 he was exchanged and was sent to Camp Parole in Annapolis. The diary covers his service after the furlough. The last entry in the diary is dated December 23, 1864 but makes reference to being taken to a hospital in Davenport where Bradd spent 3 months before returning to Mount Vernon and being discharged at the end of the war in April 1865.
