Biographical History

Charles Lewis Gazin (1904-1996) was born in Colorado and educated at the California Institute of Technology where he earned his B.S. in 1927, his M.S. in 1928 and his Ph.D. in geology and paleontology in 1930. In 1930 Gazin began work for the United States Geological Survey. In 1932 he was named Assistant Curator in the Division of Vertebrate Paleontology at the United States National Museum (USNM). Gazin became Associate Curator in 1942 and Curator of the Division in 1946. In 1967 he was named Senior Paleobiologist, and when he retired in 1970 he became Paleobiologist Emeritus. In 1982 he was named Curator Emeritus. Gazin led field expeditions almost every summer between 1934 and 1969, except while he was in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Gazin published ninety-nine works on vertebrate paleontology, many of them concerning mammalian paleontology. He served as President of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and Director of the American Geological Institute and was actively involved in other professional organizations.
