Biographical History

John F. Watson was an antiquarian, publisher and financier. He was born in New Jersey but later settled in Germantown, Pa.

John Fanning Watson, Pennsylvania antiquarian, publisher, and financier. Until 1804, he held a clerkship in the War Department, and later served in New Orleans as commissary of provisions for the army posts in Louisiana. In 1806, Watson returned to Philadelphia, and three years later opened a bookstore and published Select Reviews of Literature and Spirit of the Foreign Magazines (later the Analectic Magazine). From 1814 to 1847, he was cashier of the Bank of Germantown, and until 1859 served as treasurer and secretary of the Philadelphia, Gemrnatown & Norristown railroad. In 1820 Watson began collecting data on earliest inhabitants of Philadelphia. For this purpose, he traveled extensively and corresponded with the descendants. His findings were published in the Annals of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania in the olden time (1830, reprinted in 1842 and 1856), and other works.
