Biographical History
The Taylor family is one of the oldest, most wide spread, and prominent families in Kentucky. Immigrants from Virginia, family members settled throughout the state. Colonel Richard Taylor and his brother, Hancock, explored the Ohio River Valley and were among the earliest to descend the river to New Orleans. Hubbard Taylor surveyed much of the state and laid out the city of Newport, in 1780. Zachary Taylor became the 12th president of the United States. The Taylor's were participants in the Revolutionary War and married into other prominent Virginia and Kentucky families. Through Revolutionary War grants, land grants, and marriage, various family members eventually held large tracts of land in both states. [See the James Taylor and Family Collection, Kentucky Historical Society, 84M05.]
This branch of the Taylor family descends from Peter Taylor, who emigrated from England to Pennsylvania in 1682, settling on land which later became part of the town of Media. Ezra Taylor (1781-1825) and his wife Sarah (nee Curtis) created the bulk of the manuscript papers.
