Biographical History
Walter Albin Lunden was born in Minnesota on March 27, 1899. He received his B.A. (1922) from Gustavus Adolphus College, his M.A. (1929) from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. (1934) from Harvard University.
Lunden was professor of sociology (1931-1943) at the University of Pittsburgh when he enlisted in the Army became a chief prison officer in the Military Police. During World War II, he served overseas in England, France, and Germany, and saw combat action in the Rhineland. Lunden attained the rank of Major and was discharged in 1947.
After his service in the military, Lunden joined the faculty at Iowa State University as Associate Professor (1947-1948) of sociology in the Department of Economics and Sociology. He was soon promoted to Professor (1948-1969). During his time at Iowa State, Lunden authored numerous books and articles on criminology.
Lunden has a long list of honors and achievements. Lunden was named a fellow of the American Criminology Society, the American Sociological Association, and the American Association for Advancement of Science. He was President (1962-1963) of Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society. Lunden also served as Chairman (1957-1961) of the Governor's Committee on Penal Affairs.
Walter Lunden married Lillian M. Chack in 1924. Together they had one son, Bruce. Walter Lunden died on November 20,1990, in Cambridge, Minnesota.
