Biographical History
In 1924, seven Houston women formed the Garden Club of Houston (GCH) in order to affect a "lasting influence on the city's private landscape and public beauty." In 1931, the GCH became the first garden club in the Southwest to join the Garden Club of America, starting a long tradition of serious horticulture activities and civic involvement. Since before World War II, the GCH has concentrated on the planning and maintenance of the grounds of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the import and propagation of new plant species to Houston, and the creation of public parks.
