Biographical History

Born in Johnson County, Ind., French attended the Boston (Mass.) School of Art and Design before marrying Eli M. French in 1887. Upon her husband's death in 1894, she moved to Woodruff Place in Indianapolis. French is best remembered as the founder of the state and national divisions of the American War Mothers in 1917. Organized to conserve foodstuffs during World War I, the group expanded its support for soldiers and their families after the war. Membership now includes mothers of soldiers who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
