Harley, George, 1829-1896

Harley, pupil and friend of Virchow, Liebig and other famous medical teachers, was one of the first to introduce scientific medicine into England. His book, DISEASES OF THE LIVER, was his most important work, although he published many important papers including a classical description of paroxysmal haemoglobinuria, "Harley's Disease." He was elected a member of the Royal Society at the age of 36. Due to impaired vision, following a period of painful, total blindness, many of these delightful writings were dictated during a two year retirement to the Isle of Man.
