Biographical History

Iowa City, Iowa community volunteer Colette Pogue documented the history and the residents of the Montgomery-Butler House in Iowa City in an effort to generate support for the stabilization and rehabilitation of the pioneer home. The home was constructed ca. 1858 for the family of Elizabeth Butler Montgomery. The property was associated with a ferry operation on the Iowa River begun by Martin Montgomery and continued by the Butler children. Butler family members occupied the home until 1888 when the house and farm were rented to tenant farmers. The home was sold in 1944 and sat vacant for 2 decades before being acquired by the city of Iowa City as a part of a land purchase for the construction of a water treatment plant.

From the description of Colette Pogue research files on the Montgomery-Butler House, ca. 1980-2005. (Iowa Sate Historical Society). WorldCat record id: 430229266
