Colfax moved to South Bend, Ind. from New York City with his family in 1836. He was active in local politics and newspaper publishing. Colfax served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, his last three as Speaker. In 1865 he traveled across the continent and returned to lecture on his impressions. Colfax served as vice president under Ulysses S. Grant, but lost the 1872 nomination. That same year he was accused of participating in the Credit Mobilier scandal. His political career at an end, Colfax spent the rest of his life as a popular lecturer.
