Biographical History
H. Milton Short Jr. was born in Atlanta, Ga., in 1919 and moved to Charlotte, N. C., in 1929. He attended Charlotte City Schools, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the UNC-CH Law School. During World War II, Short served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war he began a law practice and furniture retail business in Charlotte and Florence, South Carolina. While on the Charlotte City Council (1965-79), Short served as a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Consolidation Study Committee (1968-70). A proponent of consolidation, he served as a leader of the unsuccessful effort to consolidate the city and county governments in 1971. In 1974, Short formed the MIDAS Corporation (changed to Crestran in 1977) with Charlotte mayor John M. Belk and other investors to research the feasibility of a high-speed rail system between Anderson, S. C., and Raleigh, N.C. Later, Short was the co-chairperson of the 1976 Mecklenburg County North Carolina Carter for President Campaign.
